SCOTT AUKERMAN'S ROCK 'N' ROLL RECAPLET 2
Been a while, rockers and/or rollers, I know, but hope my extra-long coverage of this year's KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmas show will make up for it!
Night one of the once-important radio station's annual charity concert seemed like a direct appeal to win back the listeners who abandoned them long ago. During "the Limp Bizkit Years," the station made a crucial mistake in courting the very same jock dicks that once made fun of the alternative music scene. It seemed like every song you would hear would have some pumped-up white guy "rapping" over a needlessly un-harmonic guitar lick.
So this night, filled with bands you would normally find populating The O.C.'s Bait Shop, seemed like a welcome change of pace. Could this mean KROQ is finally giving a big "fuck you" to the frat boys?
Well, if the high-school weightlifter that sat in front of me is any indication -- no. His T-shirt, which had the revolting maxim "If I'm not doing snatch, I'm jerking," was a grim reminder of how far the mighty 'roq has fallen. During the station's heyday, a guy like that wouldn't have been let near the theater. Okay, so the goths and new romantics would have tried to keep him out, and he would've kicked our asses and stole our comic-book money, but still.
In any case, the bill featured a fine cross between avant-guard bands from America's hipster cities, like The Shins, and dreamy Anglo-boys from across the pond, such as showstoppers Muse. So a nice mix of indie beardos and Spandau Ballet-looking motherfuckers shouting "Thank you, Los Angeleeeze!"
The first band of the night was The Music. A fine kickoff, but I found it hard to pay any attention to their Stone Roses-meets-Led-Zeppelin grooves. Not because they weren't competent, but all I could seem think about were the potential Abbot and Costello routines they must have with club owners. "No, our band is called the Music! Our music is called shitty. Third base!" Then I realized that Abbot and Costello routines were barely funny when they were actually occurring. Well, I enjoyed his dance moves.
Okay, so I like Snow Patrol. Call me an idealist, but when a good band picks such a truly awful name, you almost have to root for them. Why not just name your band The Ski-Lift Conundrum? That said, they rocked it, and "Run" is becoming a sing-along masterpiece.
Hey, Keane, Coldplay called -- they said you wound up not taking anything from them but their faggy piano. And they don't want it back! Was looking forward to this one, but their stage setup and the singer's hair were too reminiscent of the Keith auditioners from "VH1's New Partridge Family." Also, call me a purist, but am I the only one who, upon hearing a bass, wants to actually see a bassist onstage playing? We get it -- your band has no guitars. Except on the DAT tapes, I suppose.
Next, during Taking Back Sunday's set, I took one of my patented shits.
Fans of train conductor hats were pleasantly surprised by Modest Mouse's set. Their loopy guitar licks and shouty vocals were a nice change of pace, if a little underwhelming. Now featuring 0% stage patter! They seemed grumpily out of place during their set, which I found charming, but the crowd seemed to find "boring."
A surprise guest, Gwen Stefani, came out next. With her special combination of baby talk and women-empowerment-via-stripper-heels "message," Gwen rocked the crowd for a grand total of two songs. The irony of a super-overproduced-dance-rap-crap act appearing on the "indie" night escaped no one. Harajuko!
Next up were Scottish foursome Fernando Valenzuela. Now, why anyone would want to name their band after baseball's league-leading pitcher in 1986 is beyond me. In the words of my friend Jarrett Grode (imitating Andy Kindler), "If you love the matinee so much, then go there! If things are so much better on holiday, then go on one!" In doing some research about them, I kept running into the phrase "angular rhythms." I'm guessing this means that every track is made up of three totally separate songs scrunched together. It's as if they said, "Hey, let's speed up 'Paranoid Android' and add a gay disco high-hat!" A crowd favorite.
Leading to the next act, The Killers. More like "The Momentum-Killers," am I right? Perhaps later I'll conduct a seminar on "How I Do It." With their poster-boy good looks, recycled Blur lyrics, and vaguely insincere stage presence, these four offered an entertaining show, if not a necessarily indispensable one.
After a short break, out came Interpol. Love their records; find them frustratingly boring live. When they started up a new song, I could have sworn they had just played the same one. This happened three times. To some, that would be "consistency." The bass player still shows his commitment to rocking the Nazi-chic, but there's a new wrinkle -- the singer is now wearing a porkpie hat! As if to say, "See? The singer of Joy Division never wore a hat!" I don't know what it is with these guys, but they just can't hold my interest in a live setting. Plus, his robotic, monotone voice tends to grate. When he sings "We have 200 couches," it sounds like the girl from Small Wonder opened a factory outlet.
Lastly was Jimmy Eat World, or, as I like to call them, "Scotty Exits Theatre." And that's all for now, pumpkins!!!
